A Plai in the Life

When I was first informed that I would be using AI to help me author my first book of Grad Studio 2, I was not sure what to think. It all started with an interview with ChatGPT, where I gave it questions from Prof Grady and my own answers. From there, I conducted an interview where ChatGPT was giving me feedback and insights into who I am as a designer and the things that I like to make. None of this was much of a surprise to me.

First moodboarding session of the project
Prof Grady tasked us with brainstorming type layouts, AI generated imagery, and analog imagery that could represent us as designers and help guide the theme of our book.

Personally, I believe that my analog work felt the most like me. It was colorful and playful, unlike the generative imagery that was focused more on the fact that I have a messy desk as a designer. Which, guilty!

Feedback from these moodboards gave me the idea to think more of a “day in my life” and how I could use the interview process to guide my book.

After this, I hit the ground running on iterations. I built roughly 3 mock-ups, and each time learned something new about how I wanted to bind the book and the sort of information I wanted to include. Since I love vibrant colors, I knew that I wanted to include risographed pages in my book.

The final output of this book documents what it is like to go through a day in my life, starting with my morning routine and ending with when I finally get to go to sleep. Check out the entire book flipped through below by my friend, Patrick.
